The Schenectady, New York, community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Detective Timothy Higgins, who passed away during the early hours of July 27, 2026, at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City following a prolonged battle with cancer. He was 39 years old.
Detective Higgins devoted nearly 16 years of his life to serving the residents of Schenectady with professionalism, compassion, and unwavering dedication. After joining the Schenectady Police Department in 2010, he served in a variety of roles, including general patrol officer, community police officer in the Woodlawn and Mt. Pleasant neighbourhoods, investigator in the Criminal Investigations Unit, and most recently as a detective in the Youth Aid Bureau.
Throughout his career, Detective Higgins earned the admiration and respect of colleagues and community members alike. He was known not only for his commitment to public safety but also for his kindness, integrity, and genuine desire to help those in need. Whether mentoring young people, assisting families, or supporting fellow officers, he approached every aspect of his work with empathy and professionalism.
Schenectady Police Chief Brian Whipple described Higgins as a dedicated officer, trusted colleague, and loyal friend whose compassion, strength, sense of humour, and commitment to service left a lasting mark on both the department and the city he proudly served. His passing represents an immeasurable loss for the Schenectady Police Department and the community he spent his career protecting.
Beyond the badge, Timothy was a devoted husband and loving father to three young children. Family was at the centre of his life, and those who knew him best remember him as someone whose greatest pride came from caring for his loved ones. His courage throughout his illness inspired countless people, while the overwhelming support shown to his family reflects the profound impact he had on so many lives.
In response to the tragedy, the Schenectady Police Department PBA established a public fundraising campaign to help support Detective Higgins’ wife and children as they navigate the difficult months and years ahead. The outpouring of generosity from fellow officers, first responders, friends, and community members stands as a testament to the respect and admiration he earned throughout his life.
Private funeral and burial services are currently being arranged by the Higgins family.
